Max threw back his shot and leaned on the bar. He liked the taste of tequila and how it burned on the way down his throat. While he couldn’t get drunk, he could at least enjoy the simple pleasures of tasting liquor.

The music wasn’t so much music anymore, but a constant, hypnotic drone. Blinking lights and deep bass permeated the entire club. The DJ bobbed his head to the mix, sequined dresses sparkled in the lights, and dozens of bodies danced on the dance floor.

Max tipped his head back, soaking up the energy of the room, and smiled. This was his temple, a refuge from the world.

He had lost track of Jack in the crowd, but that was the point. Max and Jack had different approaches to the game. Jack was off doing his own thing, probably with a girl in a hallway somewhere, finally letting loose and taking his fill in privacy. Max took a lime wedge from the bar and sucked on the sour juices as he caught the gaze of a girl standing on the other side of the bar. He grinned when she looked at him under her long lashes, the red of her lipstick standing out against the paleness of her skin. Max’s eyes drifted to her throat, and his mouth watered. He needed a chaser after taking such a strong shot, something sweet and satisfying. These humans should have known to stay home, should have known what waited for them in the dark.

A warm, strong hand rested upon his, and before Max could realize what was happening, he had been whipped onto the dance floor. Leather. Whiskey. And the smell of something else too, all too familiar, even in the dark of the club. The stranger had found him again.

The song changed and picked up tempo, matching the beat of Max’s heart. All thoughts of the girl at the bar melted away. Whoever this stranger was, he knew how to move, drawing Max in as if he were the only person that mattered in the universe. Max grinned as he danced, draping his arms over the stranger’s shoulders and losing himself in a moment of pure, basic hedonism. Max couldn’t keep his hands off him, and the stranger held on like he was afraid to let go, afraid that the clock might strike midnight and their night would end. They pressed up against each other, cheeks almost touching, and Max’s hands wanted to be everywhere at once. The stranger was broad shouldered and lithe, his biceps firm beneath the soft texture of his shirt. He was sturdy, like a pillar, and grounded. Max’s head swam with yearning.

Their lips hovered inches from each other’s face. The stranger took up the entirety of Max’s field of vision: the curve of his cheek, the straight slope of his nose, the glint of his teeth. If it were possible, Max could have drowned in all of it.

The stranger spun Max around and pressed Max’s back up against his front.
